I have a bit of a problem - 8 barrels and only 2 mounting systems. I need another gun to let me have more options and do less barrel removal/replacement. Both of mine have factory savage stocks, one plank quality wood that I repainted and the other a gray laminate.

Currently I mounted the 6.5x284 on my painted stock, but it has been bedded to the factory recoil lug and I was not able to use the new machined recoil lug I got from Jim. I am going to do the barrel break in and first shot on a couple dozen pieces of brass, and then move this barrel to the other gun that also has a better trigger and should be able to accept the larger recoil lug.

_____________

Question

One thing I noticed is that I got the standard finish, it is highly polished. I am not to worried about reflections in the field, but it seems to mark up very easily. Just sliding along my wood barrel blocks left a mark, one walk thru the woods and its not going to look new anymore. Is there any way to protect that or easily restore/remove surface markings that are not deep scratches?

Baja, do you know what the approximate weight of that 6.5X284 is?

Well,

I just purchased a Criterian from Jim at Northlander. It's a Savage drop-in, small flange, 28", 1:10 twist, bull. It will be mated to my Savage 10FP LE. My current rifle has a stock 24", 1:10 twist, heavy barrel.

The very week that I get it mated up, I will try to get it down to MCB Quantico, VA, Range 1 for some testing. I'm a qualified Range Safety Officer there and can open any range the Marines are not using on any weekend. If you live anywhere near Quantico, VA, I urge you to join the Quantico Shooting Club, and joins us. We have rifle ranges out to 1,000yds, along with barrel trap, international skeet and comp pistol ranges.

I'm having very good luck with this Criterion 28" Bull 1:10 twist. I shot at 200, 300 and 600 yesterday at Quantico, VA and had nothing out of the 10 ring. The target was actually too big considering the 200 yd line (MR-63F), was correct for the 300 (MR-63F) and too small for the 600 (MR-65F). Winds were light and I was using Berger 155.5 gr FMJ BTHP stuck into Lapua brass with 44gr Varget.

Answering two questions here:
Guhunter - I do not have a 24" Heavy Sporter Barrel in stock but I do have a 26" Heavy Sporter. The 26" one weighs just under 3 lb.

Bajabill - If you use a medium grit 3M Scotch Brite pad cut to about 5" X 8" you can wrap it around the barrel and using hand pressure to hold it against your barrel. Rotating your 3M Pad one direction and your barrel in the other (reverse at end of travel) you will get a easily maintainable semi polished surface. It will reduce the shine slightly but it is easily touched up by yourself if needed. Go in a circular direction only. If you go up and down at the same time you will not be happy with the finish.

No picture of the rifle?

I'll put a pic up here once I get my Camera fixed. Darn thing is being very difficult. It looks basically like the one in my avatar. That pic was of my 243AI and I unscrewed the 243AI and screwed on the CBI 6BR and added one of Jim's ground lugs.

thanks Jim, I will remember that and try it if the barrel gets marked up too much.

Weight, since its on the gun now, I have to do some cyferin

This barrel has a contour that matches the 338win mag very closely, 24" 338 win mag weighs 2.85lb

my 25-06 and 30-06 have similar contours, both 22", the 25 weighs .15 lb more due to the smaller dia bore
.338-.264 dia = .25 lb

Im guessing the 6.5x284 weighs about 3.102 lbs.

Got picture

6.5x284, 24" heavy sporter contour, installed on gun, factory 110 stock
338 win mag, 24", factory heavy sporter or mag contour
7mmRemMag, 24", sporter contour
35whelen, 24" A&B barrel, more constant taper than the 338 but similar dia at muzzle, heavier

I bought a Criterion, 28", Bull, 1:10, chambered in .308 from Jim Briggs about 2-3 months ago. It shot pretty good right from the get go, but now it's a dinger. A lot of things have come in to play so it's very hard to say which have had the greatest impact. More than anything, I think it's 1) the quality of hand loads, 2) the barrel and 3) moving from Sierra to Berger bullets.

In the beginning I was shooting 190gr Sierra SMKs. I was shooting this heavier bullet because I don't consider myself much of a wind reader. The rifle with the Criterion barrel was about 1 MOA shooting the Sierras. I decided to try some different bullets. After re-reading an article on AccurateShooter by John Whidden, I decided to try 155gr Bergers (not VLD, just FMJ BHTP). The following targets were shot at MCB, Quantico, VA on a rare windless day at 100yds.

http://www.gohurst.net/images/guns/Upload1.jpg

What is on the target is incorrectly stated as 43gr Varget. Actually it was 44gr. 10 rounds. I shot these after firing 5 rounds to foul the clean barrel a bit.

It was a warm day and when I shifted to 185gr Lapua Scenars and fired 10 rounds in fairly rapid succession, I could feel the barrel heating up

http://www.gohurst.net/images/guns/Upload2.jpg

It's pretty easy to see the spread. I then waited 10 minutes and used my Sinclair count down timer to fire 10 more 185gran Lapua Scenars spaced at about 1 minute intervals

http://www.gohurst.net/images/guns/Upload3.jpg

This tightened things back up a bit. I finished off by firing 10 more rounds of the 155gr Bergers also at 1 minute intervals. These last 10 looked about the same as the 185gr Lapua Scenars fired at interval.

http://www.gohurst.net/images/guns/Upload4.jpg

I compete in F/TR, and generally have 1 minute per round, so with this Criterion barrel, I will take the full time to shoot. Had I not fired the first 25 rounds so fast, I might never have got to the point were I had that big spread.

But this Criterion barrel, I believe is pretty darned good... especially for the price I paid. I think Jim had a special on then. I see on his Vendor section they're $270 right now.

I'm going to give some credit also to my Denver Instruments MXX-123 powder scale. +/- .02 grains. And some credit to my case preparation.

Here's the rifle that did it. About the only left original is the action and AccuTriger.

Jim sold me a bull barrelled 6.5x47 lapua a couple months ago. built it while I was on midtour leave from Afghanistan. with lapua brass out of the box and sierra 120's was getting 1/2 - 3/4 inch groups. I was throwing charges with a powder measure since I didn't have time for all the prep work. this barrel is outstanding. gonna be a 1/4" group gun once I can give it the attention it needs. does seem to like the 120's jammed in the lands. gonna buy a couple more barrels, just have to find a phone over here since he doesn't do e-mail much. ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

LAL357,
The short answer is yes. I do not normally carry that barrel in inventory but I can easily include one in the order that I am putting together at this time. Give me a call and I will include it in my current inventory order.

Christmas today! Atleast it felt like it. It was cold and snowing this morning.

Arrived: 1 SS bull 260 rem 1:8 @ 28"
1 SS recoil lug
1 action wrench

This was shipped yesterday and arrived today. Now I have to track down a stock and find some time for range work.

Thanks Jim. Will probably be ordering a 1:8 223 by fall.

Will report in after load work up.
