Just got the call from NSS, my Criterion barrel in .308 has shipped. I ordered a 28" bull barrel and can't wait to get it.


If it shoots like mine, you'll be a very happy man. What twist rate? What weight bullet do you plan to use? I've fallen in love with the 155gr berger. John Whidden shoots it from 1,000 yds with success. I've not shot it from that distance yet (I will on the 27th). He's using 45gr Varget but has a 32" barrel. I'm going to try 45.5gr with my 28" barrel for the 1,000 yd match on the 27-29 May Remembering The Brave matches at Marine Corps Base, Quantico VA. You're all welcome to come shoot.

Barrel came in today and installed it just like it said in the technical articles section of this website and it went together perfect. Hav'nt had a chance to shoot any groups but fired one round to see if it was going to blow up on me or not. This is my first build and am already trying to decide whats next.

Are these barrels still available? I was reading Jim's post but didn't realize it was some time ago. I am looking for a 6.5x55 but a x47 or -284 might work as well.

I just got in two cases of Criterion Barrels, most of these are for customer orders. We will be packing them up as soon as they get wiped down and degreased. I have another batch coming in early next week that should catch me up with several shooters backorders.

Brenda will be giving you guys "The Call" as soon as your barrels ship. I just placed a 125 barrel order with Criterion for my stock. It's all you guys fault too. If you hadn't bought up all my inventory these additional barrels would not be necessary (nice problem to have).

6.5 x 47 lapua criterion barrel is a blast. Mine was shooting great till I came back to afghanistan. Planning my next barrel as soon as jim gets caught back up on his PM's. lloking at a 223 wylde and maybe a 6 br.

Just wanted to give an update on my CBI barrel in .308. The barrel is a 28" long bull barrel. This is my first build and it only took me about 1hr to swap the barrel out and drimmel the barrel channel out some on a Dura Maxx stock. This rifle is showing signs of excellent accuracy. The first 4 5-shot groups I shot were .250,.267,.586,.526, Using 44.5gr of Varget behind a 168gr Hornady A-Max. Needless to say I'm am addicted to building Savage rifles. I got out to the range today. Very first 3 shot group was exactly .250 CTC. Then the next group I fired a called flier. Restarted and proceeded to shoot about a .150 inch group. With the flier it was still .4inches. Then the wind picked up along with the rain so I shot 3 more groups not worth mentioning. But first two showed me what this barrel is capable of. Best part was this was during fire forming for my 260AI using old pulled bullets, unprocessed win brass. Can't wait to get Lapua brass.

Took it out to 630 yards today. I cleaned it good, put it on a solid rest. This thing was boring with the ease of hitting a 10 inch steel disc. Conditions were sunny, low mirage, 20mph swirling winds. I was still fireforming the 260 brass. But this thing just shot awesome. Shot 3 shot group at about 2.5 inches when conditions held constant. I am coming back for more of these barrels. It cleaned up super easy too.

Just a quick update! I ordered a Criterion barrel from Jim on 03/25 and mailed a money order that day. I did not get the "CALL", but the barrel showed up on my doorstep today 05/31. Now that is really fast compared to the wait we have for all the other brands. This was a barrel that had to be ordered because it was not a caliber and configuration that he would keep in stock. When I unwraped the barrel, I was very satisfied. This barrel looks as good as other barrels that sell for three times the price---the finish and workmanship is outstanding. Thank you, Jim! Bob

I will be answering more than one question here:
Marttri and Danley - I just recently placed a sizable order for my stocking Criterion Barrel supplies (125 Barrels). This order plus my current inventory will allow me to have on the shelf some of almost every caliber. Some of the less popular calibers and barrel lengths are in limited supply. My caliber list for instock inventory includes - 20 Practical, 204 Ruger, 223 Rem, 223 AI, 22-250, 6 BR Norma, 6 XC, 6mm Dasher,
6.5X47 Lapua, 6.5 Creedmoor, 6.5X284 Norma, 260 Rem, 260 AI, 7mm-o8 and 308 Win. Now factor in 26", 28", and 30" Barrel lengths and finally consider Varmint and Bull Barrel contours. It was very easy to get to the above referenced quantity.

BoilerUp - A price increase is planned for the August/September time frame. I do not have any solid information beyond that.

I'll start saving my pennies for that barrel; looks like I've got a couple months...

I used my Criterion barrel in serious competition for the first time last Friday. Our club, The Quantico Shooting Club, sponsored the Eastern Armed Forces Memorial Match (Remembering the Brave) at Quantico, VA.

I only shot the long range (1,000 yds) competition on Friday. Individually, I shot a 185-5X. In the team competition, I would have shot a 192-3X with no shot outside the 9 ring… had the score keeper properly kept score. Technically, a team member from another team should have kept score for our team, but instead, one of our team members ended up with the score card, didn’t realize it, and failed to write down a single shot. Had a member of another team messed up, I could have reshot the string. So, I ended up with a score of 0.

I’m not a terribly good wind reader and the wind at Quantico is very tricky… which accounts for the 185-5X individual score. In the team competition, you have team members reading the wind and helping you with the windage hold off… which accounts for what would have been 192-3X.

My point here is that the Criterion barrel performed well. My score would have been higher than all the other team members (two of them shooting custom guns) and we would have won the team competition. Think about it. In tricky wind conditions, not a single shot outside 20" from 1,000yds. You may be saying, yes, but that's 2 MOA, my rifle shoots 1/4 MOA. Sure it does... from 100yds. So does mine. There's a lot of "environment" between 100 and 1,000 yds.

Again, I believe the Criterion barrel is perfectly suitable for long range competition.

At this time Criterion offers the following 6mm Barrels:
6 BR Norma, 6X47 Lapua, 6XC, 6mm Dasher, 243 Win and 243 AI. No 6mm Remington chamberings are being offered at this time.
