Looks lime you got a shooter for sure. 41.3 looks like the ticket. Might want to try going in torwards the lands a llittle, mine liked em just touching

Yes 41.3 is what i am working with, shot this am @ 300m it was just a hair over an inch group. Will be make trip to range in am with same load with different seating depths!

Hey Jim, would you ever consider offering a 16" or 18" threaded muzzle in 300 blackout? I would love to build a short action savage or remage in this caliber (dont know if CBI can do an 8 twist though, it would be awesome to get an 8 twist in .308 win as well). Ive noticed the 18" and 16" .308 win and .300blackout sell like crazy and are hard to get online. May be worth the reamers. Anyone else share interest?

After waiting 5 months for a stock, I finally got my 1/8 twist 28" 260 CBI barrel pillar bedded, skim coated and put together. After playing around with some loads, powders,and different bullets, she seemed to like the 139 Scenars. So, today I took her to the range and tried loads from 37.5 grains to 42.0 grains of H4350. Right from the start she was grouping under 1" at 300 yards, and midway thru the test she shot a .293" group. I only shot 3 shot groups for my test, and I know a lot of shooters don't put any value in a 3 shot group, but I sure do!!!!!!!

Needless to say I'm thrilled with the barrel, and want to send Jim a big thank you for his outstanding service, a great product, and his willingness to help walk me thru my first barrel change.

OK. So new barrel installed and taken to the range. It is a 30" criterion 1:8 6mmBR on a Model 12BR with the original stock and all that.

First, in my earlier post I said it all went together well, and it had not but I didn't know it then. I measured the headspace to a sized case from my die (Wilson). However, when I took that out and tightened the nut, it moved the barrel a little bit and after going to the range a week ago, I could not chamber any of my ammo. Fair enough. I redid the barrel installation and it was VERY easy the second time. Took maybe 15 minutes as I was not hurrying. Easy fix and should have tested first time after tightening it down.

I loaded up my first load as just something to break in the barrel so wasn't expecting much and didn't load at all hot. I used the 58gr VMax and 27gr of H4895 which is the low load in the Hodgdon database.

My first 5 shots were sighting in. Second five were a stunner for me (embarassing when I see people doing way better at 2 and 300 yards!) They were under a half inch and in two holes that you really can hardly tell were made by 3 and 2 bullets each. The rest of the groups were all good enough at 1/2-3/4" with more than a few fliers that I can claim as my own.

Very happy so far and now need to build up some loads with the heavier bullets. Want to try Berger VLDs next with Varget. Need to order powders since we don't have any local reloading stores.

Looking at the groups, I notice that I think all the best ones are directly after cleaning. Interesting.

P.S. When I took the rifle apart to do the barrel, I found that the pillars for the pillar bedding were below the level of the wood so I do not think there is an actual metal on medal contact for the action. I don't think that is right. I think that the metal of the pillar should touch the bottom metal and the action. I have not had it bedded, but I have just made an appointment to have it done with a gunsmith out of Sacramento.

Does everyone bed their target actions even though they are supposed to be "pillar bedded"?

P.P.S. The groups are mostly to the lower left because I don't like to aim at the same point the bullets are hitting as I tend to chase the last hole instead of keeping the original point of aim. This way the point of aim is never obstructed by holes that might otherwise get my attention.

Not too shabby! Don't rely on your loads with the 58gr bullet a little too light for 8 twist try 105 & 108 bergers with varget and also give Rl 15 a try also!

Got a call from NSS last night and my new barrel should be here in a couple days. I should have all the pieces to my new build by end of this week or the first part of next week.

I picked up two Criterion pre-fit barrels from Jim at Northland Shooters awhile ago. A .204 Ruger and a .223 Rem AI, both in the Varmint barrel style. I then sent them out to Benchmark Barrels to have the barrels Nitride treated. I installed the .204 R on my FP 110 tactical rifle and the .223 AI on a Model 12 single shot, both in laminate stocks. I took both rifles out this Saturday PM for their maiden shooting. Not knowing what loads the barrels may like and just wanting to run some loads down the barrel to get them sighted in, I made up some WAG (wild @$$ guess) loads.
I decided to shoot 5 and then clean; shoot 5 and clean.
It took me 2 shots to re-center the scope with the new barrel on the .204 R and then I started shooting at the 100 yard targets. This is the next 8 rounds down the barrel.http://i89.photobucket.com/albums/k222/tb22mag/File1.jpg
The first shot was the top hole. The second shot was the bottom hole. I hate it when you correct the scope too far. The other hole just above the black box was the first shot, of the second five, out of the barrel after I cleaned.

Here I am just 15 rounds in on the new Criterion barrel and I am getting groups like this. This was close to the load I used on my old .204 R barrel. So I thought I would try the next five without cleaning.http://i89.photobucket.com/albums/k222/tb22mag/Target4.jpg

It was pilot error that put the #5 shot just outside to the left of the group I was working on. I knew I was left just as the trigger broke.
I think the .204 R barrel will work very well with these loads.
Barrel Criterion .204 R short throat 1/11 twist,
Load Max load of H4895 pushing a Fastex coated Sierra 39gr BK, Winchester case, Rem 71/2 primer.
I set the loads 0.005 short of the rifling. I don’t know the speed yet, didn’t take the Chrony along.
I did not have the same luck with the .223 AI,my WAG loads gave me no better than 1.000 groups.
Well one down and one more to work on, this will be fun.

Did you shoot the barrels before you sent them for Nitride? Or did you just send them out as soon as you got them?

I sent them in before I shot them.
Benchmark said because the barrels were "hand-lapped" from Criterion they wanted them before they were shot. Benchmark also said they would check to see if the chamber reaming marks needed to be lapped out before they would send them in to Nitride. They would lap out the chamber reamer marks, if needed, as part of the cost for Nitriding the barrels.

I paided $100 per barrel to have the work done by Benchmark barrels. I talked to Chris at Benchmark barrels. Turn around time depends on how fast they get the min number of barrels they need to send in for an order. Mine took longer than planned, but it was over the winter and I was not shooting anyway.

I had a Savage 223 with 1:7 shoot pretty good with 82 gr bergers but fell apart the farther out you shot i would recommend the 1:8 and not go over 77gr i have found the 73gr bergers to shoot lights out in 1:7 through 1:9 twists. I think 80 or bigger is just too big for 223.
