Been thinking about another "project". ::) 6.8 SPC II on a Savage action. More pep than a .223 and less recoil than a .308. Anybody try one? Bolt head would have to be cut but the rest should be easy. Got a extra AR upper that could be rechambered but I'am leaning more toward the Savage build. Opinions??

I'am working on it!! Need to get a bolt head opened up to the 6.8 then the rest is easy. Just another "project" to keep me out of trouble. ;) Sure beats sitting on a bar stool. ::)

OutLaw's 224 204 Apache was based on the 6.8

Nice cartridge to work with.....SSA brass seems to be the best brass that I know of so far.

Outlaw's 224 Apache was based on the 6.8??? Seems like I might have read something about that a while back? Point me to the right place and I'll do more looking. Might find something to shorten the learning curve.

I would like to build one on a left hand action.

I'm sorry....it was suppose to be 204 Apache. :-\

It's under "cartridges" in the article section.

Here's the first one:

i bought one of the Remington 1st production blot actions and i like it well enough, but i will warn you it might lead to an ar-15 in 6.8, its a cool caliber and as of yet i have yet to shoot anything with it that didn't die on the spot.

I've got a "extra" AR upper that could be converted to the 6.8 but I thought I'de start with the Savage build and see how I like the round and go from there.
Mo Money, Mo Money, Mo Money!! ;)

I already have an AR15 and a contender carbine in 6.8spc dont know if a bolt gun could out shoot them but it would be cool to have.

I had a 6.8 spc AR15 and my dad liked the caliber so much he bought a mini 14 in 6.8.

One thing that is definately on my list for the future is a 6.8 savage.
Hardest hitting light recoil round I have ever used. Very nice.
Loaded with 85 or 110 gr barnes bullets its instant death to hogs.

Forget his name but a guy on Arfcom killed a 5X elk at 380 yards with a 110 gr accubond hand load.
Also teacher got a black bear and others probably about 1000++ hogs of various sorts.

SSA brass is the only brass to use.

Get a 12 or 13 twist with a DMR chamber.

Barnes is supposed to be coming out with a new tipped 100 gr TSX bullet for that rounds.

OT - I just loaded up some 270 weatherby shells with 85 gr barnes bullets.
Got 3750 out of them. Should be interesting hog medicine.

Mikie, i thought you had done the 6.8 upper already, gary the cool factor is more than enough for me. Even though it has some very good practical uses for the ares i hunt. This could be a "nich" for one of our sponsers, don't know if it would pay for them, maybe someone will let us know. blue

Gary: I've been talking with fred @ Sharp Shooter Supply and he said he has a "left hand" bolt head opened up for the 6.8 on the shelf. That's what you need for starters. ;) The rest of the stuff is about the same for a normal Savage built.

I figure if I get a bolt head opened up, that will be the hardest part.
Was trying to decide the best way to go, AR or Savage but I've settled on the Savage platform for starters.
If it turns out to be what I'am expecting, the AR might be next. ;D And no use being in a hurry. It'll all get done in time. ;)

If you are interested in a superlight AR, my 6.8AR weighed just under 6# with iron sights and a carry handle.

6#4oz with a scope.

My setup was a cav arms lower, Clark carbon fiber handguard, 4 pict rail gas block, std dpms flat top upper, bolt carrier etc, Calvary 16" lightweight barrel. Also had a dednutz scope mount (not light but I had it), Leupold ultralight 3-9x scope.

Really nice setup and extremely light.

Bison bought out calvary and they still make the 16" lightweight barrels with a DMR chamber I believe.

Light as you can make it.

20" max IMO.

16"-18" if you want it more handy.

IF you REALLY want a 6.8 SPC, make sure you do your homey-work first.
There are several chambers out there. If you want all the potential that was promised, get the SPC II, or DMR chamber, NOT SAAMI.
And excellent website with this info is: http://www.68forums.com/
I had a DPMS AR, that I later reamed to SPCII. There was a noticeable performance gain.
