    Robinhood, the hole in my cocking piece didn't have the degree of chamfer that yours had. Savage must have made improvements along the way. The G prefix in my serial number indicates that mine was made some time between 2001 and 2009. There was however an unnecessarily large chamfer on the end of the cocking pin. The major mismatch were the dimensions of the pin and the cocking piece hole. Both were at the extremes and perhaps were outside Savage's expected tolerances. The diagram of your cocking piece pretty much matches the dimensions of mine.

    With the shiny one, there is about .002" clearance with the cocking pin and the though hole was omitted with a blind threaded hole in it's place, therefore the bearing surface it greater. The pin tilt is virtually non existent. The Major OD is closer tolerance so there is less slop with the sleeve. All in all it was an improvement.
    The Dunning-Kruger effect is alive and well.
