I back it off .002 inch to .004 inch. Watch for high pressure, if you see any indication back it off more.
Hello All,
I am new to reloading and am trying to find out what the best seating depth is for my Savage Model 16 300 WSM is. I found some good videos on youtube of determining my the length to the lands in my rifle. My question is this, once I have found this length, do I need to back it off of the lands any or go with it touching the lands?
Thanks in advance
I back it off .002 inch to .004 inch. Watch for high pressure, if you see any indication back it off more.
Thank you, very much appreciated!
Also, the distance from the bullet ogive to the lands can vary from box of bullets to box of bullets. I would not assume anything, especially when loading close to the lands. Hub
The length from base to ogive can vary quite a bit in just one box of bullets. I measure all my bullets for precision and separate the ones with long or short measurements from my established base line.Originally Posted by hub

Thanks, never knew they would be different sizes from box to box, I will start measuring them tonight.
Thanks for the help
My Model 16 in 300 WSM likes the 180 gr Nosler Accubond seated 0.040" off the lands. My best three-shot group at 100 yards was 0.25".
