Turn the baffle 180 and see if it will go in. Mine will only go in one way.
So I am one step closer to converting my 30-06 to a 300 Win mag. I ordered a complete bolt assembly from Midway and I went to slide in the new bolt. My Savage is a mid-80's era rifle so apparently it has a different front baffle than the one I received in my new bolt. Is there any reason NOT to grind off the barb or key from the new baffle? It doesn't seem to be an unsafe fix. I might just disassemble the bolt and switch baffles when the time comes. I do like the new Savage logo and jeweled markings that came with the new bolt. My original bolt has no markings at all.
Tony.

Nope. My older Savage doesn't have a groove cut for this on either side. My 30-06 bolt doesn't have this barb on the front baffle.
I don't see where filing it off would hurt. You could switch baffles until you get a better answer.
