I say 6BR for target work. I love mine. Just change to a 30-06 (.473") bolthead and get single shot follower and your set. 308 is also the old work horse for long target work.
have a model 110 long bolt in 300 win mag and i'm looking to rebarrel to something that wont kill my shoulder shooting prone in f open class . what calibers would work in a long actionfor shooting 300-500yrds and if i can find a place out to 1000yrds (not likely) .this is going to be a target gun i already have hunting guns and have savages i 'm shooting in f-t/r class (223 & 308) just hate to see this thing sitting in my safe and if i cant use it then its gone next month at the gun show. i reload so wildcats would be ok i was thinking about a 20-06 but read that there isnt alot of high b.c bullets out there to load.

i actually came up with this idea today since i want to rebarrel my 308 tigershark with a criton barrel i could take the 308 varmit barrel and put it on the long action i believe the only thing i would have to do is change the bolt head out . this could be my hunting gun which means the remington 7600 that i use now could be sold to fund the project.
Sounds like a plan to me. I'd sell a Remmy to fund a Savage any day. ;D

what parts do i need to look for to swap my long action 300 win mag bolt over to a 308 ? yeah i may end up trading the remmy for another savage at the gunshow next month
The Bolt head will have to be changed of course. You will need a .473" head for a LA. If you are shooting F-class then you will probably go single shot anyway so you won't have to worry about the mag. If you want a repeater then you may need a mag, but try yours first it may work fine for the new cartridge.

Don't hinder yourself with a .308 if you are wanting to shoot 1k. If you desire a short cartridge the .260REM is a great choice. If you want a little more oomph and a supply of good brass the 6.5 X 55 Swedish is a very good option.
I went .260AI on a 110 action for my F-Class rifle. It will be for sale soon if you are interested.
Another option to consider that would also require the bolt head swap... .284 Win. throated for 175-180 gr. bullets.Originally Posted by bootsmcguire

i've been kicking around different ideas and cal. choices .1 is to do a 6mm br most of my shooting will be at 300 with a match held once a month at 500yrds. the reason the 308 came up is becuase i have a mod.12 in 308 varmint fluted factory bbl that i'm thinking about turning into a 6br then take the 308 barrel and put it on the 100 long action . with a gun show coming up i'm also thinking of trading my rem 7600 30-06 and the sav.110 in 300 mag for a short action to work with i just hate opening my dafe up and see those just sit their ....so many guns so many choices.
