yes you can change barrels. From 204 you can do any 222,223,222mag, 6x45 or any other similar headed cartridge. If you change your bolt head with the barrel you can run any short action cartridge you wish, pretty much.
i hear you can change the barells on the savages i jus purchased this savage in 204 well about a year ago

no adjustments in headspace are needed? and where can you buy the barells
Barrels are available from various sources some of which are sponsors of this site. You also will need to set the headspace on whatever chambering you decide upon.
I would say talk to Jim Briggs at Northland Shooting Supply or Devin at Sinarms (both sponsors here). Either one would be great. Jim has alot of barrels in stock ready to go, and Sinarms will make you pretty much whatever you want and has a fast turn around time. I believe he can ussually have something done in like 2 or 3 weeks ussually (but call or message him and check cuz I may be wrong).
You will need to headspace when you change barrels, but with a go/no-go gauge set its a simple job and the Savage Barrel nut system makes it easy. Do a seach on here throught the threads and you will find a step by step procedure to guide you through. I found one and it got me through my first change. Its easier than it sounds.
Take a look at this thread, there is video to get you started.

Per chance, are you in Macon Ga? If so, I'm in Warner Robins and have built 6 Savages so far. I'll help you all I can.
