Picked up a Stevens 7-08 recently and was just wondering about the barrel shank. Measured the nut at 7/8" and according to everything Ive searched, it means it is a large shank. Is this ALWAYS true??? Other posts have led me to believe that the wsm, rum, and magnum chambers used this size shank and not on the 7-08. Is it possible to have a 7/8s nut on a small shank?? Just curious.
Thanks
Dan

Thanks for the pics. Short of taking it apart (don't really want to do) I cant tell. Looking at it visually, I cannot see the shoulder on the large shank. Could it be under the nut??
If it was, the nut would have a large gap in front.Originally Posted by Doodad

If you can't see it, it is not there.

Kinda what I was thinking also. Still doesn't make any sense. The nut is still 7/8s but no shoulder.
BTW, it is an older style nut with the square cut grooves. Dont know if that would make a difference.
the nuts at savage love playing with there nuts. have see at least 6 different ones over the years.

There is a post in the sites archives (didn't keep the link) dated 2/21/09, by MrFurious that shows pictures of the barrel nuts; shows 5/8" nut for Large shank; and 7/8" for Standard shank.

7/8" long barrel nut is for a small shank.
VISA loves me since I joined this site.
it has been pointed out to me that the small shank is 1.055" dia and the large shank is 1.120" dia so neither one is 7/8"
the 340 is closer at .857" dia ;D

He's referring to the LENGTH of the nut.

With a 7/8 nut, this says I have a standard/small shank. I was under the impression that longer nut was larger shank, Just the opposite. Thanks for setting me straight. Need all the help I can get. ;D
