Anyone?
Hi guys I need a little help. I have searched this and have read a lot of different opinions on what exactly needs to be done to make it work so here is my dilemma.
I am building a 7 saum from a 223 hog hunter action. Barrel has already been ordered. Will be using a stock and bottom metal accepting accurate wsm size mags. Here is where I need a little help. What all is need to make the bolt feed, fire, and extract? Have read anything from just swapping out bolt head to swapping bolt head, firing pin, and baffle. If anyone has done this please let me know what all it took.
Thanks
Anyone?
Definitely need the bolt head. I do not believe you will need to change anything else in the action.
The factory Short Action Mags had a longer bolt head that required a different (longer) firing pin assembly. If you buy the PTG Magnum bolt head in the standard length of .437, you can use your standard short action factory firing pin.
This would be the Precision(non Custom) piece shown here.

The Dunning-Kruger effect is alive and well.
Robinhood thanks a lot. That’s the info I was looking for. Do you know if they will be any feeding issues with this caliber and bolt head?
I bought a complete short action bolt with the magnum bolthead allready on it so I never had a problem with that.
I bought an Accurate Mag and bottom metal. It fit right in with no problems. I bought the three round mag. and,
it cycles with no problems. Hope that helps.
Where did you buy complete bolt at? I have only been able to find left hand bolts.
There was a person on another site that had it for sale.
What is the bolt Alignment cut on the ptg bolts?
Below is a front baffle. See the alignment "rail"? I can only assume that PT&G is willing to cut the bolt head with the same "rail"/ Alignment Cut.
The Dunning-Kruger effect is alive and well.
If your looking for a short action magnum bolt head Midway USA had them in stock a few days ago
Thanks. Is it a savage head or ptg? I saw the savage and was reading the reviews and the last review got me confused once again on which bolt head I needed for this caliber
If You buy a Savage Short action magnum bolt head you will need to purchase the short action magnum firing pin assembly. The standard bolt head is 7/16" long. The Short action magnum is 9/16". The PT&G bolt head for the short magnum can be made in the 7/16 length in the link I already provided you. Midway may sell them I do not know.
You may also need to buy the Savage magnum front baffle, This I am not certain of.
Left to right
short action (7/16" lugs)
short action controlled round feed(1/2" lugs)
long action (1/2" lugs)
new short action heavy magnum (9/16" lugs)
The Dunning-Kruger effect is alive and well.
Thanks a lot. I’ll just order directly from ptg
Glad to have found this info. I’m building a 7mm saum from a m10 308. Have been trying to get this exact information myself. I’ve got a Masterpiece BA chassis that the rifle is in now. Am ordering a Brux barrel, I shoot lefty lost sight in my right eye overseas. Found I could order a complete LH SA Bolt from Midway with the magnum Bolt head. Was’nt sure about the firing pin length. I’m a new member here, best 15 bucks I’ve spent all year. Thanks
