I would vote for the dark. By the way nice looking rifle!
So on my 7.62x39 build I am stumped on a color. I think a darker color isnthe way to go since the gun is stainless. Regarded the color it will have a glossy lacquer finish.
First pic is just dry and second is just lightly wetting the stock.
I would vote for the dark. By the way nice looking rifle!
Lots of coats of Tru Oil and call it good.

Personal preference. I like both the hand rubbed and the satin finish, but sometimes the lacquer is needed when afeild.
The Dunning-Kruger effect is alive and well.
Your rifle your choice and it takes a lot more work, but a hand rubbed tru oil finish can bling and protect with the best of em. Also really easy to go over the existing finish and re touch with additional coats in a few years or even in a few decades if necessary.

Here are a couple of my oil finishes the bottom being a Glenfield is much shinier than the top JC Higgins however you can see the damage from a very minor incident where the gun tipped over a lacquer would have done much better
I'm not sure a Cast Iron and Kevlar finish would have helped that very much.

Lol that actually fell about a foot but it slid from a table to a chair if I can remember correctly. It's my sons .22 though so some "usage" is bound to happen.
I generally prefer darker on gun wood, but I've seen some nice lighter walnut with really dark mineral streaking that looked fantastic with a light finish due to the contrast.

Is that a Richard's Microfit stock and what grade?
My vote would be the darker finish. Really makes the stainless pop
The darker color looks good to me. Nice job.
Put the same stock on a 1903 Springfield. Lots of tru.oil then several coats of woodworkers was. I like the dark!
Put a wet rag on the ding and apply a steam iron You would be surprised how it will raise the grain to allow a fix..
I like the darker look.

I vote darker finish.
Darker Finish and steel wool for matte gloss !
Gonna go against the grain here ( pun intended). My vote for lighter finish.
