Thanks for the input guys. What are your thoughts on 4-12x40 versus 3-9x50? Is there an advantage in trading lens diameter for mag. power?
One of my other rifles has a 3-9x40 Leupold VX Freedom. Image quality is great, but don't know whether it's worth looking into something with a larger diameter and/or magnification.
I'll check out the Nikon ProStaff while I'm at it though

For greater context, by dense woods I mean visibility up to 100 yds, and shots being taken within that range.
The area is a mix of evergreen forests with expanses of pine and manzanita in the drier parts, and big, open meadows in the wet parts.

@celltech, the issue is the image clarity. As part of an all-in-one package, the Bushnell is fine for what it is, but I think it would be better suited to a rimfire than a .308
The biggest issue is the image quality. Granted, the Leupold cost at least twice as much, but in comparison it's image is bright with good contrast and just feels more open
