When I switched the Weaver scope for a Nikon I had to change the mounting plates and ringd to Leupold Dual dovetail mounts. That seemed to work out pretty good for me.

Originally purchased with Weaver Kaspa 3-9x40 scope. The rings will suffice for the Crossfire but the mounting base plates are at too great a distance from eachother. The front ring sits about 1/4" up on the just widening objective lens housing. Is there any solution without having to go for a 6.5" or so Picantinny rail? Seems lke this might be a common problem.

You have to buy the weaver rail for it to mount that scope comfortable. I have the same setup as you and swapped out the rings for burris zee rings because they aren't so wide and a weaver rail.
Thanks. Yes, changing the mounting plates is the way to go. As you can see, my experience is limited. I see on Cabelas that they also have a Weaver® Savage® Axis Multislot One-Piece Base that should do the trick.
Change scopes or get a 1-piece base.
