6.5 x 55
I’ve got a 110 in 270, I picked up at a pawn shop to try my hand at a rebarrel, trigger, etc, and wanting to try shooting at 600 yards and over.
I had originally planned on a 6.5 creedmoor, but have read a few threads where feeding a short action round in a long action can have hiccups. What would be a good caliber, that shoots flat, and does a decent job at distance, that will feed ok?
If I can’t do the creed, I thought about doing a 300 wm, but I’d rather have a softer shooting gun than a 300.
Any advice would be much appreciated, for my first time doing this
Thanks
6.5 x 55

I have a .223 Axis Hardwood that came from the factory with a long action (much to my surprise). It feeds and cycles beautifully. But it of course it has the stock inletting for a short action mag and it seems to sit more forward towards the barrel.
I am a total noob in doing a long to short conversion. What do you have to do to get the magazine to fit...or is it internal?
I second the recommendation above. The 6.5 X 55 is really good. Even more so as an AI.
Third on the 6.5x55. The Swede can do anything the 260 or Creedmoor can do. With a bit more class IMO. If you go that route, stay with 1-8 Twist and 26".
Are going to handload or Factory ammo ??
6.5 Creedmoor is the only cartridge I am aware of that has a superb selection of factory ammo that will shoot very good at longer ranges.
If handloading, the 6.5x55 and better yet 6.5x55 Ackley Improved would be a superb choice if you want to avoid possible feeding issues.
The feeding issues of a short action cartridge in a long action can happen, but most of the time it works out just fine.
I’m using factory ammo for now, been wanting to try my hand at reloading, but that’s going to be awhile. That does limit my choices. If I did try a 6.5 creed, is the follower the only piece needed for magazine? The gun is a blind mag now, but since I’m only going to use the action, I may go to dbm
Thanks for the replies.. And help
6.5 Creed would by my only decision if I wanted to shoot factory ammo at longer ranges.
I don't think you need a different follower if going from 270win to 6.5 Creed.
If there are any feeding issues, they can be solved by playing with the magazine feed lips. Maybe also playing with the follower and follower spring to adjust the angle a little, but that is very rare. Usually there are no feeding issues, and if there are, playing with the feed lips does the trick.
6.5-06 if you hand load.
But honestly your .270 will shoot out to 600 yards just fine.
FWIW I have a long action with a .308 barrel and is seems to feed just fine so far.
Thanks for the replies. I just bought a 6.5 creed barrel from a member here, gonna give it a try. I’m sure I’ll be back asking questions
Hope it works for you. Creedmoor is a great cartridge. I’ve got 4 of them and they all shoot great. Savage used to make everything in a long action.
In a long action I'd go either 6.5x55 or 6.5-284. I'd get a 7.5" twist to take advantage of the new 150SMKs and 155 Bergers. You get Lapua brass in either flavor too.

I have a 6.5 creed in a Stevens LA and it feeds and ejects great...But because I have a 1 piece rail on it right now the centerfeed mag is a PITA to load. You bought yours at a pawn shop it could be an older stagger feed and that probably would load easier...If you switch out to custom DBM then you have solved it....But if yours is a CF and you haven't bought mount bases yet 2 piece might be better.
Just some food for thought.
Good luck with your Creed, I love mine,
Randy
