I've shot a few .284's (couple bolts and a cool Savage 99 lever gun). Good round. About the same performance as a .280Rem depending on the action length (which affects bullet seating depth of course).
Never have messed with the .25-.284 wildcat. I'm guessing that it'd perform about like a .25-06. I've seen a few guys shooting 6.5-.284. Good performer. Loud. Supposedly barrel life is a bit short compared to the 6.5x55 Swede. 6.5 Creedmore, and .260 Remington.
In a light, short action intended for deer, I'd be inclined to suggest that you go with a 7-08, .260 Remington, or one of the .25-08 wildcats (.25-Souper, .25-Humdinger, etc..........no I didn't make those names up) unless you really want the little bit of extra speed that you could get out of the .284 or the .25-.284.
