Welcome aboard
Hi,
i just signed up here to better get to know about Savage rifles. I ordered one and am waiting for delivery and then it will be 10 day waiting period, so I'll have quite a bit of waiting. So, a good time to study up.
I just started shooting bolt guns about six months ago. Before that it was service rifles, both M1As and AR15s. I shot mostly across the course high power matches and a few Palma matches with the M1A. That was the late nineties. I started shooting again after I retired, and again in high power matches. I was rusty and my eyes were not helping much and I became frustrated. I had an old Palma rifle that I acquired in trade many years ago and I dug it out and started messing around with it.
It it is a Remington 40X in 308 (Palma) in a McMillan prone stock. I put a scope on it that was meant for my M1A and got started doing 1000 yard and Palma matches in F/TR Class. There is a range fairly close that shoots once a month and the atmosphere is very casual. I love it! I also had a custom rifle built that I am still sorting out, but I won't go into that.
All this effort into the long range shooting made me miss my 223s again. I shopped used and a couple places locally, but finally went straight to Savage to see what they offered. There was a couple I liked and I proceeded to explore a bit here for help. In a matter of a few days I got all the information that I needed to get started. I ordered a 12FV in 223 from Cabelas. It was cheap like I wanted, with a 26" barrel in 9 twist. Close enough to get started for me! I'll probably put it in a Boyd's stock, purchase an aftermarket trigger and use a Harris bipod (I am hooked on prone shooting).
That's about it for now, but I'll probably have questions later.
Richard
