I talked my buddy into buying his first Savage. He got a stainless 6.5 cm in stainless with a magazine. He likes the gun but the stock is too long.He is around 5'6". He laid it beside his 700 and it appears at least a 1" longer. What is the lop on a standard stock and what are the youth stocks.

take a look at Boyds hardwood gunstocks web site. You can search for a specific savage and gunstock. You can always have them customize the LOP.
Just a word of caution however, be prepared to wait at least 1-2 months for them to get it to you.
Easy enough, if it isn't an axis just cut it off. Not sure about the difference in LOP but but my brothers youth rifle has a hard plastic butt plate. I'd say the difference based on that is the thickness of the recoil pad.
I have a model 11 synthetic that I cut down to 12" LOP including the recoil pad but I had to re shape the pad on a belt sander so that the taper to the stock was correct.
A good wife and a steady job has ruined many a great hunter.
