Do I really need a action wrench or can I do it the old way with a barrel vice and wrench to get the smooth nut off with pipe wrench and replace with regular nut???

I didn't even use a barrel vise. Just put it in an action wrench/vise and pipe wrenched the nut.
I use 2 pieces of oak wood in a vise, tighten up pretty good, then take my barrel nut wrench, tighten it up on the smooth nut, and it comes right off.

i personally used a pipe wrench yesterday to remove my factory barrel and just replaced it
