I would say you are good to go
I found a new Long Range Hunter in a 6.5x284 for cheap locally. I was wondering if this could be reballed to a 6.5 creedmoor without any other modifications? I know the bullets are a lot longer in a 6.5x284 and am wondering if they will feed well since most 6.5 creedmoor use short actions and this is a long action.
I would say you are good to go
it will feed and function just fine. Can I ask why you want to step down in performance? If I were you I would go ahead and wear the 6.5-284 barrel out before replacing it.
I'm not sure I'm even going to buy the gun yet. The ammo is expensive for the 6.5x284 and I don't reload yet. I'm looking to build a 6.5 creedmoor and having a hard time finding an action to build on for reasonable. Thought the long range hunter may be an option for the build since it already has a decent stock and trigger. All's it needs is the new barrel.
I would save the $300 plus its going to cost for a new barrel and buy a reloading kit. Roll your own and be very happy with the 6.5-284.
I think you should d the swap for sure,,,and then send me that darn 6.5x284 barrel...GRIN
I have to agree with the other 6.5-284 supporters - spend that barrel money on reloading equipment and get an enjoyable, rewarding hobby as a bonus.
I recently bought my first Savage, a Model 12BVSS in 6.5-284 Norma and while I'm still in the handload development stages and have only been able to try 12 different recipes given the cold, windy weather we're having lately, I do have one load that went into one ragged hole at 100 yards. It's an awesome cartridge!
