Check out Gunshack. They have some great prices on ER Shaw barrels in a varmit profile. Those should fit the bill of a heavy barrel rifle.

I'm interested in upgrading my .308 Axis by installing a heavy barrel, but I find myself in the awkward position of realizing a heavy replacement barrel would cost almost as much as a new HB Axis!

Same dilemma here, I wanted to upgrade the barrel for my 7mm-08 Axis from the factory sporter to a heavier one. Then I noticed Bud's has the .243 HB Axis for only $319.00!! So do I order a new barrel from say Apache or NSS and wait 6-8 weeks and pay $225-250.00 or just spend the extra $100.00 and get a new rifle right now.
You could do what many of us here do. Buy the Buds gun now and shoot it, and get the next barrel on order. Then you can start thinking about your next barrel order :-))
Oh! Your not trying to be economically responsible about this endeavor are you ? :-))
All the rifles I have bought have been doners for the actions. Then the spending really begins ! :-))
Welcome to the "Brotherhood" :-))..........Jim
Wish I could do that, between Ammo, range fees, accessories and other knick knacks there isn't much left over every month.
Do you mean the Brotherhood of Bankruptcy? :)
I'm going with a Apache gun works barrel .I've been torn between a .223 Ackley improved or the 22-204 and then I finally realized that I will eventually own both calibers so might as well quit tire kicking and get started.
What are the wait times at the moment? Just curious.
If you go with the replacement barrel, you can sell the take off to recoup some money.
Gee, just buy the HB Axis and shoot it. I recently bought a new HB Axis in 243 and after 5 shots, I pulled the bbl and rechambered it for 243 AI.
Cheap, easy and FUN!!!!
