Do you cast your own bullets have seen some interesting shapes for sabots also depending your caliber as you said rifle bullets can be used to make sabots
Hi,
I am planning on trying to reload some 12 ga slugs for next years deer season.
They will be for a semi auto , with a fully rifled barrel.
I seen a sabot for the 50 cal pistol bullets somewhere, but haven't seen it again.
I currently shoot winchester plat. tips. They avg 1 1/2 100 yd groups, but at $12.00 a box of 5, its easy to spend $30 to $40 just sighting in.
Soooo,
Anyone have any recipes or tips for me.
Thanks.

I use the Lyman mould that casts a slug that looks like a pellet for a air rifle - just slip it in a wad and load as normal. The mould comes with load data or the Lyman book has more data.
This should get you what you need:

Lyman also makes a mold for a saboted slug. It looks like a giant airgun pellet and fits in a standard shot wad with a fold crimp. I've played with the 20ga version a little but that project got put on the back burner. What I've found so far is that wheel weight and range lead is too hard...accuracy was bad. I've got some pure lead to try but haven't had time.
Eric in NC is fast!!!! ;D
Edit: Here's a place that sells the cast slugs. Looks like they'll be taking orders again on Monday. Never tried their stuff but it would be a cheap way to try the cast stuff before putting money into the gear.

we load that lyman thing, its freakin awsome. cant remember what powder we use, etc, but mine shoots 1 3/4" @ 100yd through a single shot NEF slug gun. hits w a wallop too - and cheap! ill dig up the load data when i get home this week
