I have opened one up by trimming just the fore end tip with a dremel and a file and then boiling it in water in a big pot that came with my turkey fryer. After letting it boil for a good 5 to 10 minutes it softened the synthetic up just enough to force a 1" broom handle ( Not glamorous but it's what I had available) into the fore end channel the length of the stock (to keep everything straight) and secure it while it cooled. Once cooled it stayed in the new shape.
It worked out well for me and fit the model 10 BA takeoff barrel and 110 action I had like it was made for it.
After you complete the new barrel channel you can use the broom for sweeping. Nothing like dual use tools.
