With the buttstock being cut it's hard to tell but with a 20" bbl I'd hazard a pretty safe guess it was once an 1899H.
Hello all. My first post here. I've recently been bitten by the Savage bug and have recently bought two Savages. My first one in a .300 Savage is a 99 R model. It was easy to figure out what model it was by the forearm.

This second one I bought the other day has me stumped. It is a 1899 model in a .303 Savage with a serial number of 277XXX. I've done hours of searching and the only thing I have came up with is its a 1925 carbine but can't figure out what model.
One thing I have noticed is that the bottom of the barrel is stamped with "OFF" and an arrow for removal but the forearm is not for a takedown model. The forearm does have matching numbers. Also where the forearm meets the receiver there are notches on top that seem to be there so it will fit a thicker barrel. I tried to unscrew the barrel but it didn't move so I left well enough alone. It seems to have a 20" barrel if I'm measuring it correctly.
There is no saddle ring on the side and I can't see any marks where one may have been.
This gun has made it without being tapped for a scope but unfortunately they cut the butt stock way down, so I've been searching for a replacement stock. Any help as to what I need to look for and what would fit to replace it would be appreciated.

I have not been able to shoot the .303 yet, still waiting on mail order ammo. I've taken the scope off and looking to put a peep sight on it.
Thanks for any help and info you may have as to what it is.
