It worked out great, I still use the rifles favorite load from before the rechambering as my fireform load and it still shoots awsome.

Are these 223 AI's walk about rifles?
Mine is.

So as you shoot your looking around for your spent brass?
No, I usually try to cycle the bolt slowly enough so I can pick the brass out of the action. It rarely lands on the ground.

Mine is a rechambered factory Savage barrel on a model 12 action. It is a very good shooter and very effective on dogs.

Both of mine are heavy stainless barrels, not much good for walking, I am however rounding up the pieces for a 223AI sporter for just such occasions.
I have come to like the little AIs so much I am seriously considering getting out of 22-250 business, not very efficient when compared to the 223 AI.

Im slowly seriously considering going AI on my 223..... i have a 22-250AI but its a heavy barrel varminter so being AI made sense, i guess i can try your method of catching the brass by hand if it works out then i might just go that AI conversion.Originally Posted by laportecharlie
Im super happy w/ my 223AI, Its really not a walk around rifle, could be, just a little heavy. Here are the specs:
SSS T&T receiver, SSS Lug, A&B 24" Varm Contour 1:14 223AI barrel, 10FP bolt handle, Basix 2 trigger, B&C Duramax stock, Nikon Monarch 6.5-20 Scope FCH Dot. It does over 3600FPS w/ 50 gr tips and one of its fav. rounds is the 60Gr. Sierra Varmiter- Yes in a 1:14 twist. Its no .22-250, but w/ 26-27.x of powder, the performance, no brass growth and accuracy is outstanding w/ this round/ combination.
It typically shoots 4/5 shots (usually the flyer is me) into .35-.4" groups at 110yds as seen below. That group is one of the better ones.

Once upon a time, I set up a NEF that I ran a 223AI reamer into as a suppressor demo gun and I cut the barrel to 17" and threaded it. I have since began using AR's as demo guns and the NEF AI has been moved to the truck and has replaced my 22 K Hornet. It has a 6x Weaver and I shoot 63 grain semi-pointed and it kills everything in it's path with serious efficiency.
Back in the early 80's when I lived in Alaska, I gained strong respect for the 223 in the hands of native hunters. I certainly don't advocate the 223 as a bear or moose gun, but many of them were killed for meat as well as Caribou by the ton. The AI even in a short barrelled gun makes a fine weapon in the hands of someone who can shoot and hunt and knows where to put the bullet. Afterall, it is bullet placement that makes the kill.
dcloco - that is too funny! Great minds think alike I guess.
