It should be a simple replacement of the mag box and follower. You may also have to replace the bolt front baffle as it may have a spacer sticking off the back to shorten the bolt throw for short action rounds.
I am looking at possibly purchasing an older 110 Model Savage that is a 243. The action screw spacing is 5" which I understand to be a long action but the magazine is for a short action 243 cartridge.
If I decided to set the action up as a long action is it possible to change the short action magazine out to a long action magazine and how much trouble/cost are we talking?
Thanks for any info you can share!!!

The long action in a short action cartridge only has a short action mag cut out.
To fit a long action mag you would have to have the bottom of the action cut out.
The only spacers in the mag i've seen are on .223.
I think mine had a long mag box that had a spacer in the back of it.
It wouldn't surprise me if Savage did it both ways.
I've never seen one like your talking about.
Anybody else. lol
The long/short actions are only compatible with short action magazines. The mag opening is only long enough for the short magazines. You would have to mill the opening longer to the rear and slot the action for the magazine tab to get a long action magazine to work. More work than the benefit is worth. IMHO.
Here is a picture of mine when it was a 338 Edge.

I stand corrected.
Thanks everyone, as a newbie to Savage rifles I am always learning things on this forum. Hopefully by summer I will have a donor rifle picked up for an action and I can add a 260 Criterion Barrel and a Choate stock to create an accurate long range rifle. Looking forward to punching some paper and then some whitetails in the fall.
