I haven't heard of anyone building a 22 Hornet. I guess you could do it. Would probably end up being a single shot. Where it me, I would go for a 221 Fireball. (which I did)
Has anyone ever built a .22 Hornet on a savage SA. Any insight would be helpful

it has a smaller head than a 223 so you would have problems extracting and feeding it
I would just buy a model 40.
Or a .20 vartarg? Both these work with the .223. Planning to try out Sinman's barrel next week.Originally Posted by laportecharlie
I am building a 20 Vartarg right now. LH blue stagger feed action with a SSS trigger, Shilen barrel, Duramax stock converted to LH and a 6X24X50 Bushnell Elite 4200. Have 1000 pieces of brass. Just waiting for my dies which are backordered.

.22 hornet and .218 bee will not work with out major mods
.223 Rem AI, .22-250 AI, .220 Swift AI .243 Win AI, .6mm Rem AI, .257 Rob AI, .25-06 AI, 6.5x300wsm .30-06 AI, .270 STW, 7mm STW, 28 nosler, .416 Taylor
...The Hornet is a rimmed case like a .22lr rimfire...Just bigger..lol.Originally Posted by setterman
Started out leaning to the Hornet until several folks here suggested the .221 fb and .20 vartarg.
Sure you all ready know CZ, Savage, and Ruger make a Hornet, there must be others.
If you choose the .221 fb case you would have to modify the mag box to make it a repeater, several ways to do it.
Try a model 40 with "LIL GUN" they will shoot. I have had 2 and they really love "LIL GUN".
+1 on the Lil'Gun. My hunting partner and his two sons have three or four 22 Hornets. I load all their ammo (approx 7,000 rounds) and we use nothing but Lil'Gun. Same in the 221 FB

Ditto on Lil'gun. My understanding is that it's not possible to over pressure a hornet case with lil'gun from powder charge. You could dip a case into the powder and fill it to the brim, it will still be in safe pressure for the hornet.
Mine is a k-hornet and it shoots lights-out with the fire forming loads using 35gr vmax bullets.
I also have 2 221 fireballs model 700 LVSF strictly factory and they love "LIL GUN". 13.5 grs with a 40 gr. v-max. Topped with Leupold VarX III 6.5-20x40LR with a varmint reticle. It makes a terrific PD gun. Between these 2 and my model 40 Hornet life is good if your not a PD. ;D ::)
Do mag mods affect it's ability to feed other calibers or do you have to un-tweak it if you want to go back to .223 or the like?Originally Posted by appleseed
