Because it was developed as a "standard components available" F-class cartridge. The barrels tend to be VERY long as well.
The case capacity is slightly less than a 260 Rem. So quite a bit smaller than a 6.5-284.

Barrels get burned out by shooting rapidly, or with very hot loads. Also remember that what a very competitive F-class shooter calls "shot out" is not so by anyone else's definition.
A 264WM has been considered a "Barrel burner" for quite some time. I have never had an issue with mine....
