I just ordered a Stevens 200 in 308. The plan is to use it as is for the upcoming deer season, then do a complete makeover after. T&T action, new stock (might actually do that right away), custom barrel, Rifle Basix trigger.

I bought a Leupold fixed 4x on quick release rings off of ebay a number of years back that I will use. Maybe I will change the rings out for something better after hunting season, don't know yet. I am quite ignorant and inexperienced when it comes to rifle optics and mounting. I bought a Remington BDL in SS back in 1992 in 270 Win. I put a Leupold VariX II 3-9 with a 50mm OL. I was always frustrated because I couldn't get the scope back far enough for proper eye relief. Now I see that I bought the wrong mount for it, but I didn't know anything and just went with it. Just to illustrate how little I knew until the last few days when I started poking around on the net about gun optics.

Anyway, I live in central New York now and I very much doubt if I'll ever get a shot at 200 yards, and probably hardly ever over 100. I just want a nice hunting rifle that I enjoy shooting.

So what would be a decent scope base to use and be sure that I have enough eye relief adjustment? I would rather go with something on the inexpensive side in case I switch out different type rings after the season.

Suggestions? Thanks for any help!
