The Axis uses short action bolt heads with 7/16" lugs. The standard magnum bolt heads have 1/2" lugs. The Axis 1 piece firing pin will not reach the bolt face. So...in a nutshell, no it won't work.
correct me if I'm wrong but the Axis uses the same style barrels and bolt heads as the 10/110, so I should be able to rebarrel and change the bolt head to build an Axis in .264win, right? how about the magazines, issues there?

that's what I needed to know, thank you. looks like I move ahead with finding the right 110. until someone makes firing pins that are an extra 1/16" in length.
PTG will make you a magnum bolt head with a short enough shank to make the factory firing pin work. They just cut off how much you need off the shank. I had them build me a magnum head with .550 lugs and they cut the shank short enough to work. This was on a regular action not an axis, but I think it would work for an axis as well, although Sharpshooter would probably know better than me.

The shank isn't the problem, The lugs are 1/16th longer on the mag. and there is no adjustment on the firing pin.
The firing pin comes up short.
Even if the lugs are 1/16 to long, wouldn't shorting the shank a 16th allow the firing pin to travel the extra 16th needed? Maybe i'm just not thinking clearly, did just have baby and haven't slept much.
Rebarrel to 280ai. It will get you very close to magnum performance.
Long action shanks are 1/16th longer than the short actions to begin with. Add 1/16th to the mag lugs and you'd have to shorten the shank 1/8. I need to check but i'll bet your getting real close to bolthead retaining pin.
If it was very easy someone would have done it by now.
I agree with LoneWolf. But if you insist on a 6.5mm, the 6.5/06AI would be a good bet also.
Anyway, Good Luck, and please keep us informed.......Jim
Thirty06, your right I forgot about that shank being longer as well. I bet if you call PTG they will build one to the specs needed. It may cost a little more, but I bet they would do it. Also lonewolf's idea of a 280 AI is a good one.
