    CCI 400 vs CCI 450 in .223

The #14 Speer manual list both CCI 400 & 450 on their .223 loads.

The Sierra 5th edition manul list Winchester small rifle primers .223 loads.

The Hornady Seventh edition listed Remington 7 1/2 primers for their .223.

My question is which primer would be best for my situation? Small rifle or Small rifle magnum? I'm curremtly using Varget powder which normally gives a pretty full case. I had been using CCI 400 with good results but thought I might try CCI 450's. Whats your thoughts on using Small rifle magnum vs small rifle primers?

Me personally I like the 450's with Varget. If you shoot for accuracy it does matter. Full case of varget+450"s is a good load to start with. The 450's have a thicker cup so if you fire an AR-15 it's even better. Less chance of a slam fire.

I get better accuracy with the CCI 400 or CCI BR4 primer over the CCI 450 magnum.

I'm shooting thru a mod 12 VLP DBM. Very accurate rifle. I'll just reduce my current load 2 grains and work my way up. I thought maybe their was a reason to use a Magnum primer in a .223 case.

Hi yes there is a reason for magnum primers, the reason they were developed was for sub zero temp military use.
RUMs are like woman in Stiletto heals, you know they are going to put you in the poor house, but that has never stopped anyone from pursuing them.

I use a 450 primer for AA2200( I concider it a must for this powder) and some BLC-2 loads but otherwise 400s or 7.5s get the nod depending on application.

I have most in stock and try them all, but end up with BRs most of the time.
