Yes...there is. Just because the bolt head floats, does not mean the thrust face of the bolt head and the thrust surface of the action share the same plane.
Black the lugs on the bolt, shoot a round, and see how much contact there is.
Interesting- what's a good material to use?

....and tooth paste works rather well. Plain jane toothpaste that is.
Well, if the bolt head floats, how is lapping going to correct any mis-alignment? All it will do is smooth out the mating faces with the same degree of (mis)alignment.Originally Posted by dcloco

You cant prove your full contact-mis-alignment without a measureing tool but the bolt will deffinately open smoother. For the most part it is eliminating any ruff or un-even mating surfaces and as for mis-alignment..You dont need a pefect alignment for a floating bolthead...

Forgot to add, which do you believe is being lapped - the chrome moly or stainless action...or the plated bolthead?
If the bolt is the misalignment problem and not in line with the action lugs. Lapping will only make the bolt close easier and the real problem worse. The bottom line is if the action lugs are perpendicular with the barrel, and bolt faces parallel, Don't mess with it. Draw it out on paper and you'll see what I mean.
