    Large shank/small shank

Hi all, How do you know if you have a large shank or small shank. Are they caliber specific or model#.

    Thanks in advance.

Target and LRPV models will be large shank, others too, such as some mags. large shank barrels will have a step in the barrel at the nut where it gets bigger. Small shank will have no step at the nut. Bill

Measure the length of the barrel nut:

    5/8" is a Large shank
    7/8" is a Small shank

small shank is on the left. large shank is on the right.

Pdog shows it easiest, I just look for the step in the barrel.

Okay, Will the step up be butting up against the receiver. All of my Savages have a step up at the receiver but I don't know if I am looking at the right thing.

Can somebody post a pic of a small shank barrel where it threads into the receiver.

I already did, along with a large shank one. Those threads shown are the ones that thread into the action. The step-down in the barrel contour should be right after the barrel nut.

heres a pic of one of my small shank guns.. Notice it is smooth(no step down) after the barrel nut.

The only thing is that SOME 1" bull barrels that are large shank will not have this "step-down" after the barrel nut. Atleast my 6br doesnt.

If you measure the length of your barrel nut it will also tell you, as was mentioned above.
