    Loads & bullets for a Sav. 250

i've been shooting Rem. factory 100 grain and getting 1"or less groups. I will be getting dies and bullets soon and would like to know if anyone has used the "Sierra Pro hunter" or the "Speer hot core" bullets in the 100 grain weight? I am planning on WW 760 , I also have Varget and WW 748. If anyone has any starting loads or other suggestions will be appreciated. Thanks, Jack

What is your gun? If it is an old (slow twist) Savage it may not shoot the Sierra or Speer 100 grainers well. Have that situation with a couple of my pre-war 99's. They shoot the stubby semi-spitzer factory 100 grainers great, but won't shoot the longer Sierra, Speer or Hornady bullets worth a hoot. Have to go with the 87 grain flat base bullets in those guns.

If it is a more modern 10 twist, it should be fine with either of those though.

The gun is a Stevens 200 that I put the Adams and Bennet barrel on. It has a 1 in 10 twist. The Speer or the Sierra bullets are suppose to be flat base bullets. I am looking for a good whitetail bullet and thought a 100 grain load would be a good choice. Jack

Both of those should work great in the 10" twist barrel. I have used the Sierra and the 100 grain Hornady Interlock on deer out of the 250 with good results.

Remington 1x fired brass, cci primer, H4895 100 grn nosler B tip.
Started with 33 grns avg velocity 2985fps at muzzle.
34 grns avg velocity 3067 fps at muzzle.
34.5 grns avg velocity 3110 fps at muzzle.
.015 off the lands. No pressure signs with my set up.
1" 100 yd group, off sand bags.
    Stevens 200 was 22-250, now 250 savage a&b barrel.
Weaver grand slam rings and bases, Bushnell trophy 3x9.
No pressure signs, mild to no recoil. Sweet shooting. Only Had 20 empty cases to reload with at first.
I might not try anything else.
I was not real serious when I shot these, just wanted to see what the load would do while breaking in the barrel. I think this will shoot clover leafs with a little more shooting.
I shot a box of Remington 100 grn psp that avg velocity was 2860 fps at muzzle, but only shot 1 1/2" at 100 yds , to start the break in and to get some brass.
    Good luck.

I've run the 100gr ProHunters in my 25-06 for whitetails, Running them at 250-3000 speeds you should not have a problem, they kill very well. At 25-06 speeds inside 100 yards they are a bit explosive. The ProHunter is a flat base bullet.

Thanks everyone for the replies. I will be trying both the Sierra Pro hunter and the Speer hot cores in 100 grains. I would try some bonded bullets but the cost always seems to be a lot more then the cup and core bullets.
I will try and post the results in a few weeks on how well they perform. Jack

Well you don't need bonded bullets when you use a fairly mild cartridge like the 250 - one of the reasons I like it.

Things like the 300 and 250 Savage and plain old cup and core bullets used to work fine before medium sized game got armor plated and couldn't be killed with anything less than a magnum flinging super bullets at 3,500 fps.

You might think about trying some Barnes 80 gr. TTSX in it to speed things up a little.

I have a 250 AI that I am going to try them in when the weather warms up.
