It will do very well with a good barrel, but extraction could in theory be a problem. The .35 Rem case head is ~0.013" smaller than the standard '06 head size but it will probably work just fine with the Savage bolt face. You can heat up .35 Remington loads quite a bit in a bolt action, an article in Handloader #98 gave load results for a 22" Remington M760 as follows:

    Bullet - fps/fpe
    150 FN - 2543/2155
    180 FN - 2420/2342
    200 RN - 2395/2548
    250 RN - 2061/2359

Not quite .358 WCF performance, but well above factory specs. To me the biggest advantage would be improved accuracy over most lever actions....except for those 1/2 moa Marlins a few shooters like to brag on. ::)

Don't have a bolt action Savage in 35 Rem, but I have a couple of Swede Mausers. Works fine in the Mauser action (claw type extractor).

A 16.5" barreled small ring Mauser in 35 Rem makes a dandy woods gun, I would think a Savage would be great too.

If you have ejection problems (I bet the factory extractor will extract the case, but the smaller diameter would make ejection iffy), you could try moding a 223 or PPC bolt head/extractor.

The .35 Rem would make a dandy woods gun especially with pointy bullets you cant use in a lever action. The .35 Rem was a staple of deer hunters in the north woods of Vermont, New Hampshire and Maine and you will still see old-timers using them. Loading to the specs for hotter loads makes it still more versatile.
