quick question on the simmons the came on my -06.

I got a model 110 30-06 that came with the simmons on it from the factory. Of course, the 3x9x40. I've always shot guns but I'm just really getting into learning in depth and target shooting at more than a hundred yards. It just seems at 200 yds, with a 9 power, I just ain't got enough power. Should I go for a higher power or just a better scope?

I am running a Swift 4-12x40 on my 30-06 and for hunting it is great. for target even at 100yds I feel a little underscoped. On my target guns I am running on the 204 a 8-32x44, the 223 a 6-24x40, the 308 (which also does alot of my deer hunting) a 6-24x50, and the 243AI is a 10-40x50. I prefer to have more scope than needed rather than not enough. The only catch is, if you are going to use the gun for hunting make sure the lower end of the power range will go low enough to suit your needs.

The first year I went deer hunting with the 12FV 308 I had the 8-32x44 on the gun and had a deer pop out at like 60yds and had trouble getting on the deer because it filled the scope. Had to let it walk out quite a ways before I could shoot, so now I backed off to the 6-24x50.

Everone has their own tastes, try some of your buddies and see what you like.

after 3 years i decided to take the plunge with my 06 and get a real set of rings and a real scope. it will probally be a nikon buckmaster 4.5x14x40 with side focus. and the bdc. the banner was reassigned to the marlin 22. guess my point is get a good set of rings and a good scope out the gate.

Yeah. See its for hunting and shooting. I love em both a can't afford to have 2 seperate guns for both right now. I would like to get a higher power scope to shoot targets with but people are giving me mixed opinions. Like my dad pulled the "in the army I shot a couple hundred yards with iron sight, ya just need to practice". Haha

I wouldn't go above a 4-12x or 5-15x on a variable scope to be used on a dual purpose rifle, like the Nikon just mentioned.

Personally, my dedicated hunting rifle has a 2-7x on it, but have 4-12x scopes on a few other rifles.

Natchez has a sale on Nitrex scopes ( http://www.natchezss.com/index.cfm ), plus $50 or $100 rebate. Never used one, but there have been some good comments about them.
