Recommendations for starting to shoot competition

How did you all get started in modern day competition shooting matches. I am not interested in any type of prone competitions.

Identify the types of competitions you're interested in. If you don't want to shoot prone, it simplifies your choices. Find a match series close to you. Attend a match. Politely introduce yourself to the match director and offer your assistance. Observe. During the periods between relays, there will be a lot of cleaning and adjusting of equipment. That's usually a good time to politely observe the equipment and ask questions. Most match shooters are happy to discuss their gear choices, although some are in a state of high concentration and not into helping newbs. You have to feel it out, but a lot of competitors are happy to help new shooters. Don't be surprised at the money a lot of guys invest in their equipment. Custom guns aren't cheap, but try to note what the winners are shooting.
