    BVSS - single shot conversion

I'd like to convert a BVSS (.223) from an internal magazine to an easy feed, single shot. The rifle is only used from the bench. I bought a single shot follower from Midway but it was obviously designed for a different magazine.

Is there an easy way to convert this rifle to a single shot?

You could block the mag box under follower so it accepts only one round. The same way a 30rd mag is limited to accept only 10rd s for instance.

Other option is to simply load one round at a time instead of loading several. Works pretty good for most people.

If you put a round on top of the magazine, the bullet nose drops and the rifle will jam. We have been inserting one cartridge at a time into the magazine but I was hoping to get around that. I've got a few Rem rifles that have a single shot follower that allows you to just drop in a cartridge and slide the bolt forward Something like that would be nice for the BVSS. Or ... maybe a replacement for the magazine that converts the rifle into a single shot.

Oh.. well, I can single load a cartridge just fine in mine. I don’t set it on the mag, I partially insert the cartridge into the chamber, & push the Bolt home.

Try this site. I got one for .223 and one for .308. They both worked great...

Is yours a center feed magazine or the older stagger feed? If center feed, you may want to try one of the adapters from Sharp Shooter Supply. I thought he used to have them for the stagger feed too but don't see them on the site now. I usually just do the same as what Dave said with mine though and don't have any trouble when getting it partially inserted in the chamber to start with.

Fred ( SSS ) does have single shot loading ramps for the model 12 actions.

I can't see how they would work. Presumably, you would still have to push the round down through the magazine lips to get a round on the follower. If so, how is that different then using the magazine just the way it is?

My experience with this issue resulted in the same conclusion. I learned to place the nose of the cartridge as far forward of the magazine lips as I could, without looking. There's no need to load the magazine for single shot. I practiced with dummy rounds and snap caps until I could do it smoothly without taking my eye from the scope. Didn't take long. This is for steel target shooting, not rapid fire.

The single shot ramp replaces the magazine, it is not a follower like was offered by Score Hi for the old stagger feeds.

I contacted SSS by email and the only thing they mentioned was the follower, which doesn't make sense to me. I was originally trying to grab the little .223 case rim and inserting the cartridge nose into the chamber before closing the bolt. Now I just single load the magazine but that's not what I'd prefer. What would work is a replacement dummy magazine that lets a round sit on top of it and aligns with the chamber. I could probably make one out of wood but I really don't have the time for that. A plastic dummy would be great.

Isn't the 12 BVSS a "center feed"?? If so, the "Fred Sled" will do what is needed to make it a single shot. (replaces the center feed mag fitted in the mag well of the stock.

Maybe I just don't get it but the SSS site reads as follows:

    Single-Shot Loading Ramps
    (Fit center-feed actions only)
Our CNC machined aluminum single-shot loading ramp for the new Savage center-feed 10/110 and Axis actions offer a precise fit into the existing magazine port of the action and require no modifications to the action or glue for installation. This means you can install and remove the loading ramp with ease to switch back and forth between a single-shot and a repeater depending on your needs.

There is no indication that you need to replace the internal magazine. If so, what would hold the feed ramp up? It suggests that the ramp can just be inserted and removed easily. It doesn't seem that it could be placed on top of the magazine lips.

The Fred Sled clearly states that they are for drop out magazine rifles so that won't work in my BVSS.

Hi, the Single-Shot Loading Ramps work on the Model 12 BVSS but the centerfeed mag needs to be removed and the ramp placed under the action.
It does work with the model 12

The Model 12 is a "center feed" so the MAG is secured in the mag well of the stock and held in place by a retaining clip and contacts the bottom of the action.
The (single shot) Fred Sled replaces the center feed mag. MAG comes out of the mag well and the Fred Sled goes back in it's place.

I have a model 12 with a "Single Shot Loading Ramp. "action only build". Ramp is placed on the bottom of the action where a mag, (secured in the stock mag well) would contact the action. Taped then epoxied in place after fitting.
You're making too much out of it. Keep it simple.

Take a look at this......Savage 12FV With Choate Tactical Stock and SSS Feed Ramp - YouTube

Yours should be similar. The SSS ramp may or may not fit perfectly. If it needs support from the bottom of the mag well, just be creative. I'm running two, one fit fine, the other required some support. Some options as above...epoxy, glue, JB Weld, magazine spring. I actually fitted a small piece of wood surrounded by foam rubber to hold it in place. Whatever works.

Too much extra work!! Pull the action, remove the mag, replace "it" with the "Fred Sled". Done deal.
And just in case you havn't figured it out yet, the Fred Sled "IS" a single shot adapter.

I was thinking the same. I don’t see any reason why the SSS ramp won’t work. I have had them in a bunch of rifles with no issues feeding single shot. I even just used one and rounded the bottom edges off to exactly match the contour of my action so it would fit in a manners stock with no mag cutout. Perfect fit and didn’t have to redo the bedding job.

Only thing I can think of, and I don’t have a blind mag setup to prove, is wondering that once you pull out the blind mag is there any lip under the action from the stock to support the rear of the SSS ramp? If not then the ramp may not stay in place without making a block to sit in the mag well opening to hold the ramp up when it’s assembled.

I have one setup in a DBM stock and it works perfectly. Yes you can look up from the bottom and see the ramp in place but who cares. And the factory DBM frame has a tab that hold the ramp in place. It does allow it to drop about an 1/8” and rattles a little if you shake it, but it don’t fall out. Add a small little spacer and it’s good to go.

Found these pics from a while back to show how they go in. Pretty self explanatory once you have it in hand, but had someone ask one time so I took some pics of it.

thought I’d post them here since the OP was suggesting they fit in the mag box.

Wow! Excellent post! I’m thinking about doing the same thing for my club’s benchrest matches. I don’t have a BVSS yet but would definitely like to know how they shoot.

Don't own a BVSS but, it has an internal "center feed" mag "under the action" and rests against the bottom of the action??
Held in place with a clip and down pressure from the action?? FRED (single shot) SLED replaces the mag.
Not sure what it is folks arn't understanding? Maybe you ARE? As far as a single shot adapter/ramp, just a matter of fitting it the way YOU want it. Epoxy keeps mine in place. A good hard TAP will remove it. Even think I packed the Mag well with lead shot in a plastic bag for extra weight.

I've used several of the SSS "sleds" on FV12's. The first 3 just fit into the bottom of the action without any additional mods. This last one I used would not "snap" into place as the others had, so I found some thick closed cell packing foam laying around, and cut it to fit into the empty mag well on a BVSS stock. Have not had a chance to take it to the range again. I discovered that this particular action/sled was not a tight fit as the previous 3 were when the sled fell down into the empty mag well on the stock. LOL.

This is how I converted my BVSS to a single shot. It is permanent. I filled the mag well with a block of walnut the acrglassed a Score Hi sled to the top then bedded the entire action. It makes the stock slightly heavier and much stiffer through the action.
