Savage should've sent you a shipping tag, it shouldn't cost you to ship it back for their mistake.
I just received my new Model 12 LRPV chambered in .223 with a 1:7 twist. So yesterday I decided to see how long of cartridge with a 80 gr SMK would chamber. So I made up a dummy round to 2.50 and it wouldn't chamber so I reduced it to 2.45 no go so I reduced it again to 2.40 and finally all the way to 2.30. The bolt would close but wouldn't eject without force. Finally I went to 2.26 and the bolt would close but the bullet still had a ring on it from being in the throat. A factory round at 2.20 functioned fine. I bought the gun to shoot heavy bullets so this wasn't going to work. So I checked the twist with a cleaning rod and it came out to a 1:12 twist. The barrel is marked .223 and a 7 and I called Savage with the serial number and it called for a 1:7 twist. So $95 shipping later it's making it's way back to Savage. It must have been built on a Monday. I like the gun and I can't wait to get it back and out shooting.

I have a hunch Savage will square that 95 bucks with you once they see the problem. Don't be afraid to ask for it.
Exactly. If you don’t ask, nothing will be done. Remember, it’s the squeaky wheel that gets the oil.
Why would a factory 7 twist have any more freebore than a 12 twist?
Id say because somebody entered in some bad information to a computer on the cnc.
Mainly because a 1-7 twist rate barrel is designed to shoot heavier / longer bullets than a 1-12 twist rate barrel. Not saying that Savage uses a different chamber reamer for different twist rates, but most custom barrel makers do.
My new Rock Creek 1-7 twist 5R barrel is being chambered with .100" freebore so I can seat my bullet's out to a maximum COAL of 2.550"
I wasn't aware that Savage made a 12 twist in 223, only 9 and 7. Is Savage actually chambering barrels still? Or do they subcontract that work out?
Seems to me somebody, somewhere got their barrel blanks mixed up and chambered a slow twist 223 that ended up on a LRPV. Total FUBAR!
Banning a gun will not solve what is a mental health crisis inflamed by incendiary rhetoric on social and television media. The first amendment in this case is less precious and more likely the causal factor than the second amendment.
Don't worry I will be asking for my shipping back. Just my luck, Savage is closed from July 3rd to July 13th. Is this normal?
Was this a special order? The only ones I see are 1-9

Let us know if the fast twist barrel actually has a longer throat.
