Looks like an Axis front baffle. Wonder if Savage is making some changes yet again. Would make sense really - all the Axis rifles use S/A bolt heads and baffles, so why make two different parts (one for Axis, one for everything else)?

I didn't know the Axis used that baffle. I thought it was for additional stroke when 110's/10's chambered for the short magnums. I'm with you though. Why make 2 parts? I'm looking at the finish on that action. I have seen very few that nice.

Do you mean you have seen very few Ultralite actions that nice or Savage actions as a group? My Ultralite 6.5 CM 110 (short action but marked 110*) has the best machine and finish work I have ever seen on any Savage. It looks more like a custom rifle costing 2x the price.

The baffle on mine is slightly larger in height than the bolt head, though it does have some pretty sharp corners on it. No hang-ups on cycling bolt slowly or rapidly. I am going to try beveling those sharp corners on the baffles, bolt heads and raceways on some of my less smooth cycling actions. It sounds like a good idea to help reduce hangups on the bolt travel.

(* Since when did they start marking short actions as 110? )

Savage actions as a whole. Looks like the new owners are taking fit and finish seriously.

I guessed that was what you meant, but wanted to double check. Maybe down the road Savage will sell blueprinted Ultralite actions, though based on the price of their single shot actions, they would likely be in the $900+ price range. A cheaper way to get one now, to build a rifle with might be to purchase an Ultralite rifle with a Proof Research carbon fiber barrel on it in a popular cartridge, then sell the barrel and the stock if you weren't interested in the Proof barrel.

$1327 for a new Savage Ultralite Rifle, including shipping, tax and a $15 FFL fee
<$700 - $800> Selling the barrel on Gunbroker etc
<$150+> for the Accufit stock on eBay
    ------------------------------------------------------
$377 to $477 for the action with the bolt, trigger and magazine

I think I would keep the barrel.
