There are definitely many roads you can take here. For my rifles that are used for hunting and the occasional day at the range, I like them lighter and not minding the barrel getting a little warm. I usually get around this by giving it time to cool off or by taking multiple guns to the range. Other things to consider is upgrading your optics (already mentioned), upgrading your stock, and more. I have learned a lot about my Savage rifle already and one thing I learned was that I didn't know as much about my Savage 10 FP as I thought I did ...lol.
