    Sooty cases

ok guys shootin 243ai loading 70gr sierra blitzkings, with n140. Went to range today to test my loads out and ended up with soot around length of case and around the rim. THe loads were laddered from 38.3-39.2 in increments of .3gr. Now here is the kicker they were seated at sierras coal of 2.670. Which gave me not much more than a bullet diameter seated in case. Federal brass full length sized . rem 9.5 primers. I also shot some other 85 gr gamekings today that did not soot up at all so i know its not my chamber. Do i need to maybe seat these bullets deeper in case? As this is not a low pressure load. If i seat deeper it would give me like .050-.070 jump is this normal for lighter bullets? First time this has happened to me the cses have only been reloaded 3 Times.

3 times may be enough to harden the necks so they did not expand all the way. measure the necks of some of these 4x fired cases against some that were fired 3x

Is this federal brass junk? I cant measure the 4 time fired as all my 3 time fired are sized and ready to go.

    Re: Sooty cases

ok measured the federal fired necks from today they measure .268-.269 the fired rem cases from today that i loaded the 85 gr in are .276-.279. Is this common to happen with certain brass? Is it possible to fix this? Or do i need to junk this brass?

    Re: Sooty cases

ok so can i anneal the fired cases b4 forming as well as the ones that i have already sized and ready to load so i dont have to worry about the neck problem? also could the work hardened brass be dangerous to fire from my gun? Meaning can it wreck anything if i didnt know the were work hardened?

You can anneal them at any time they are empty.
when they go south you will see them start to get cracks in one or two of them.
the neck or shoulder. the guns are built with the idea of containing a ruptured case. I would not by any means say run cases you know are splitting. I have cases that are on 10x and look good and some that were coming apart 1/2" above the rim after 2x

    Re: Sooty cases

all the way to the rim? wow. not hard to push a couple deeper to see what happens. could be your pushing them out faster then the brass expands. Yes short/ light bullets will be a long ways from the lands and long heavy ones will be deep in the case. that is why some have custom chambers made to shoot a specific bullet.
