I have an 8 soon to be 9 yr old boy that is currently shooting a cricket, but I am exploring options for a 22lr with a detachable box magazine for things like appleseed shoots, He wants a 10/22, but I want him to focus more on rounds on target rather than rounds done quickly

There are 18 different youth models - 6 of them with a magazine - 2 are .22lr. If you go to the SAVAGE website and click on GUN FINDER at the top. You can sellect the options and it will sort down to what you are looking for.

I have a model 62 semi auto with a 10rnd mag. It shoots fantastic!
