Likely a 1:12. Put a cleaning rod with a tight patch in it and see how far it takes for 1 revolution.
What’s the Twist Rate ?
I just bought:
Savage Model 112
Series J
22-250
Serial # C845??2
What’s the twist rate ?
I want to be accurate out to 500 yards for prairie dogs.
What bullet weight do you recommend for this barrel ?
Thx
Likely a 1:12. Put a cleaning rod with a tight patch in it and see how far it takes for 1 revolution.
Test it yourself. Put a tight fitting patch on a cleaning rod. Put a strip of scotch tape on the rod. Draw it thru and measure the distance it travels to make a full turn. Traditionally most 22-250 were 12 or 14 twist.
Or call Savage with the serial # and they can tell you.
112 Series J would be a 1-14".

We are all assuming this rifle does not have a replacement barrel which may have a different twist.
OP- Was the rifle purchased new?
Maybe you are assuming...... he said it was a model 112 series J 22-250......all that is stamped on the barrel, no where else.

If it is the original barrel and it sounds like it is then it should be a 14 twist. That is Saami spec. With it being a button rifled barrel the twist might vary a little but it should be a 14.

Most of the Savage .22-250s made recently were made with 1:12 twists. I have one and a friend has one with the 1:12.
My older .22-250 Remington 700 has a 1:14 twist that was the original twist. That shoots up to 55 grain bullets accurately, but can't take much heavier.
I believe that Savage made one Model 12 in 1:9 twist in one of their upscale versions a couple of years ago but I think they might have discontinued that one.
I was tempted to buy one of them, but decided that I really didn't need another .22-250.
14 twist
55gr vmax

I have a FV12 22/250 12T, likes the 53g bullets pretty good. 50-55gr bullets should perform well.
