Boyd Stock options for 110 Tactical Hunter 6.5 CM

I've recently picked up a Cabela's Tactical Hunter in 6.5 CM (https://www.cabelas.com/product/CENT...ER/2947831.uts) and am really pleased overall with every aspect of the gun with the exception of the stock. I've started looking and would like to go with something like the Boyd's Heritage or Pro-Varmint but I'm new to customizing bolt actions so I'm a little lost on how to respond to things like the Boyd's Build and Price lookup page. For this rifle would I be correct in searching for Savage - 10 Top Bolt Release - Short Action, Detachable Magazine? In addition, would it be possible to change the magazine system from the proprietary Savage magazine to AICS stye? What would I need to do that and how would that change the stock selection?

Sorry for asking what I know to most here are pretty basic questions.

You are on the right track with the Boyd’s Savage 10 SA, top bolt release, DBM stock. However the Savage AICS metal frame assembly will not work with the current DBM stock inlet without doing some dremel work. And you would need to check with Savage Arms to see if they will sell you the SA, AICS frame assembly since this part is fairly new and is most likely being reserved for new rifle production. I believe several of the aftermarket manufacturers of AICS bottom metal for Savage will inlet a stock for you. The follow thread shows how to DIY. http://www.savageshooters.com/showth...BM-AICS-Bottom

So JP, if I understand you correctly, I could go ahead and go with a stock that would use the current proprietary Savage magazine and then later when I'm ready I could get the bottom metal for the AICS and then inlet the stock or have an aftermarket vendor do it. Right?

BTW, I got home and double-checked and I have a bottom bolt release. Assume I can still do the bottom metal upgrade at a later date?

Correct. You could use the standard Savage DBM metal frame assembly and magazine cap. Or even the current plastic DBM frame assembly and Axis-style bottom cap to save money short term. There are some aftermarket 10-round magazines (ex. Dark Eagle) available for the Savage standard DBM frame assembly, but they don’t feed as well as the AICS magazines IMO. l don't believe the aftermarket AICS bottom metal with incorporated trigger guard is compatible with the Savage bottom bolt release sear. The Savage AICS magazine frame assembly is compatible with the “new style” (thick front lip) Savage TBR or BBR metal trigger guards. IMO, the only place for a Savage plastic trigger guard is the trash.

Deleted information repeated from OP's second post.

I just measured the MDT short action AICS magazine with the idea I would restock my Savage 12 FV 6.5mm Creedmoor.
Turns out the mag only has 2.832 inches of internal space so I presume that would mean that rounds couldn't be seated out longer than 2.830 so there would be a bit of space to keep the tips from binding in the mag.
That puts some serious limits on the loads that have performed the best.
Most of the reloads that were the most accurate are over 2.832 O.A.L.

Anyone know of another short action AICS mag that allows another 0.025 in internal length?

The Dark eagle option JP mentioned uses the factory magazine that allows for over 2.900"

The Dunning-Kruger effect is alive and well.
