Boyds stock upgrades on a few Savages

This weekend, I upgraded the factory plastic stocks on my 111-270 and 11-223 with Boyds Laminate. I also added pillars to both.
A bit more weight, but rather negligible. These are both hunting rifles, the 270 deer, the 223 coyote.
(The 223 scope is further back than I want it... but with minimal recoil hasn't become a priority to re-position forward)

Look awesome how does the laser stippling look up close? Thinking of doing it on my next stock. My son wants Forrest cam for his Axis, didn't like it at first but has since grown on me.

I will take a few close-up pics for you... and attach it to this thread. It is quite good grip, more "grippy" than checkering. The wood grain is still visible through the stipple. The Forest Camo was not my first choice either, but I found the short action stock BNIB unused, for about 1/2 the cost of a new. I don't mind it on a hunting rifle.

I just finished taking 3 oz. of wood off my Boyd's stock for my Howa Mini. I like Boyd's stocks, but they are darn heavy. Not sure why they don't give you the option to get one without the monte carlo cheek piece. Not all of us want that and it adds weight.

But for the price and availability, I guess a guy can't complain too much.

Good call on the pillars. They need them.

I just finished taking 3 oz. of wood off my Boyd's stock for my Howa Mini.

Did you remove the buttplate and drill a few holes center of buttstock? I think a person could safely take 8oz out that way.

I did, but that didn't help as much as I thought. The buttstock is VERY heavy on the Boyd's stocks, always leading to a tail-heavy gun in my experience. I've bought 4 Boyd's stocks now, and they are all that way. I think they are a good match for guns with heavier barrels though, where someone isn't as worried about overall weight or who might be looking for a little heavier gun to manage recoil.

I probably put 3 hours into my last Boyd's stock, all to remove 4 oz. LOL

The biggest difference to me was not so much the weight as the shape. My face shape doesn't get along with monte carlo cheek pieces very well. I prefer the straight butt stock. And I like slimmer forends than what Boyd's makes. So removing those two features makes the stocks seem more like a conventional Savage stock to me, which I like.

The best part about my Boyd's stocks is that they are fairly easy to bed an action to, and once you do that they can be very accurate stocks indeed.
