    Rl26 for 6.5-284

    Well I think my bolt head will be delivered today from Numrich and I be able to put the rifle together. So now I've been thinking of working up a load for it using rl26 and Berger 140 vld's. Anybody got any ideas?
    I found one thread on some site where someone used Quickload and it was showing max safe load was 58.7 at around 3050. I think QL went as high as 60 grs. with fps as high as 3150 but stated that was way over max.
    I don't really know about QL but I've heard it is conservative ? I think it said pressure was like 61000?

    Here's what I got from a not-very-successful OCW test today with my Ruger No.1 chambered for the 6.5-284 Norma (CIP-spec, 26" bbl).
    Lapua brass, Nosler 140-grain Custom Comp, Reloder-26 lot#07914Z092415

    52.0 = 2746
    52.4 = 2765
    52.8 = 2790
    53.2 = 2808
    53.6 = 2837
    54.0 = 2861

    That's actually a touch slower than what QL predicts with the default Re-26 powder file, but closer than I expected. It also predicts pressure levels which seem too low to me. I haven't rigged the Pressure Trace to this rifle, so I can't check pressure.

    On another forum, someone experienced 'pressure signs' (which don't typically manifest until 70 - 75,000 psi, or more in strong, tight rifles) and far too high velocity at 55 grains. That doesn't fit well with my numbers today, which in turn makes one wonder about somewhat large variation in the lots Alliant has imported.
