Short action screw after bedding

After bedding my new laminated stock, my front action screw is only grabbing about 1 1/2 threads. Haven't tried the rear yet, waiting on trigger. For those who have experienced this or need a longer screw for other reasons, have you found these at your local hardware/box store, or do you have to order on line and probably pay through the nose? Really don't want to run all over town hoping to find something that will work. Or maybe some members have extras laying around that would either trade or sell. Didn't post a WTB yet, thought I would see what members do.

Any GOOD hardware store has what you want. 1/4 x 28. Get them longer and cut then to the length YOU WANT!!

My local Ace Hdwe. didn't seem to have, but they had regular 1/4-28 bolts(removed head) for my bedding job. Seems like they had 20, 24, and 32 thread size, but no 28's.

Or you can sharpshooter supply and have them mail you some 2" ones and cut them to the correct length

Already struck out. Even went to two fastener supply places and the 28 thread is a bit odd, even though it is commercially considered the standard for fine thread. I did find something close enough for the front--not button head, but still a socket cap screw and will work, since it is recessed.

Worst case, get a 1/4 x 28 bolt that is a bit too long, put a washer(s) under it and stack as many as needed.

Not pretty but good until you can find a long term solution.

You can also fine tune a too longer screw with washers under the head that is same size as the hole the screw is recessed in the stock.

You can but to length but need to have a die on the fastener before you so you can take it off and clean up the threads as you do so. A bit more money for the die.

I have that but have not needed. My Eabco stock came with a screw but did not need it, my Boyds needed it so the Eabco screw went into hat one.

Always buy a couple of nuts to screw on before you cut the screw then just turn them off and clean the thread at same time.

but depends on what grade the nut is and the bolt. I like the die but have used the nuts.

Thanks everyone for the help. Received my new trigger guard(thanks devildogandboy) and the rear screw grabs by three threads, which is the minimum I wanted and I believe is adequate. If I need more bite into the receiver, someone please let me know and I will go from there.

If the bedding is too high you "might" have a problems feeding from the magazine.

It only raised very little. The fit was pretty darn good prior to bedding. As a matter of fact, I had to keep pushing the magazine further down into the stock to keep the bolt from rubbing the lips. I'll know for sure when I take it to the range.
