Safe to build WSM on small shank?

Can I use a small shank action for a WSM?

I think Fred (SSS) said the chamber tends to get hot and can cause stuck cases. Not a safety issue.

Fred at SSS mentioned extraction issues. Proly what foxx stated. I know someone asked this not to long ago. Search the forum and you'll Proly find the post. Fred chimed in several times regarding the issue with doing that. I myself have a 300 wsm craving....but don't have a large shank short action at the moment.

To me the chamber getting hot is a mute point. Doesn't matter if it's large or small the chamber will still get hot. Maybe it will take 1 or 2 more rounds before the large shank catches up heat wise but the large will also stay hotter longer. Just some thoughts.

^^^^ I agree, and that's why it's probably okay for a hunting rifle. But it is the reason Fred said they went to large shank after the first production run. And he has good inside contacts/resources there.

    Why Dean, why....

I talked myself out of the build cause I didn't think you could do it on a small shank, then you go and post a pic
    Like that lol

I am also jones'in for a WSM. I have a large shank short action to use but I am unsure what to ask for as far as a new bolt head, or any thing else really. It looks like PTG is the only place that has a short action magnum bolt head in stock.
Can anyone tell me every thing I need for my bolt and action to make a reliable WSM? Besides the obvious magazine and barrel.
I have rebarreled a couple of other Savages but never changed a bolt head

These are what I shoot out of my WSMs

    300 30" 12 twist 110gr Sierra's HP's
    7mm 28" 9 twist 110gr Barnes TTSX's
    270 28" 11 twist 110gr Horndy V max's
    6.5 30" 9 twist 107gr Sierra HP's "can shoot 140s"
    257 28" 10 twist 95gr Nosler Balistic tips
    6mm 30" 10 twist 87gr Horndy Vmax's "can shoot 105s and 107s"

All of they above are easy 4000 fps + rounds, it makes it hard to choose

So all I need for my bolt to change it to WSM is a Short Action Right Hand Magnum Bolt Head? Correct?

Correct, and if you can't find a short action one just use a long action one and shorten it, use your existing bolt head as a template and just Dremel or grind it down.

Thanks for the help. One more question. Push feed or Control feed?

All mine are push feed, I have a empty control feed head but have never done anything with it.

The action needs to have the recess for the crf bolt heads. The ejector sits in the action

I saw another forum member build one on a savage lightweight hunter action. Anyone have any thoughts on that?
