    Savage long action

Well guys need some options here i bought a 110 hs precision in 338 lapua just for the cool factor basically.. So as I'm getting older I'm thinking about selling it and buying something I'll actually use other than at the range. I had a 284 win and shot awesome thinking or buy another. My thing is I want guns to hunt with if I want to. My hunting ground is less 600 yards. So my thinking on the lines of the lapua is for what and where I shoot kinda pointless to have this gun.. Let me what you're thought are

Well the 338 is certainly capable of hunting up to Brown Bear, assume that is not what you do.

600 yds? That's not so much a cartridge as knowing how to shoot it. Almost all of them will shoot that far and kill with the right loads.

What are you hunting and where? 308 will do almost anything and I assume you don't want a lot of recoil aka a 300 WM.

30-06 with heavier bullets will go easily out past 600 yds (as will 308)

270, ditto, 284 ditto, 260 ditto. The 6 mms will do it fine (not sure on the killing power)

Its more the right bullet for the game, range and its velocity than a caliber

So, agreed the Lapua is indeed pointless (and god awful costly) for anything under 1000 yds and I want one to!

It sounds like you have more than what you need in other calibers for what you are hunting (and I have more than I need as well so that's not a knock)

so sell the Lapua and buy a Savage 22 target for range fun. that's the lowest cost best 22 for that.

If you want a woods 22 then a CZ used 452 or new 45X (5?) are great guns.

Brian, your max range to hunt is 600? That's a far piece for most of PA that I know. I do know of some guys near Halifax that hunted with 338Laps. They would sit on either side of a small valley/big draw and shoot out to 900 from platforms. They would walk their hunting partner to their deer until they got there. Last I heard of them was about 6 years ago though.

There are many options, as stated, that will do what you want. Look at the 264 mag if you want more than what you have. Your 30-06 is capable too, if it is accurate enough. If you want to sell the Lap, go ahead. I would probably invest in meaningful upgrades and components for that '06, and you could still have left over funds for something else too like a nice flintlock. I asked for one for Christmas, but Santa has his own ideas now days.

No idea on handles. I knew a SSG in the Nasty Guard in 2003 that was telling me about his neighbors and what he was planning to have built to hunt with them. He lived a little East of Halifax. I ran into him about 6 years ago at a gun show and he said they were still doing it.
